The patient is a 2-year-old otherwise healthy male on day 3 of runny nose and cough and day 2 of fever.
He woke up several times overnight with fussiness and crying.
He is drinking liquids well and has had a slightly decreased appetite with solids.
He has had several wet diapers and has had normal stools.
Physical exam is notable for a tympanic temperature of 102.5°F (oral temp 102.2°F)
Bilateral severe bulging of his tympanic membranes and erythema and exudates of his pharynx
He has no significant past medical history
He has not had his flu vaccine this season. Both parents smoke at home.
